Chandler Hill Partners Blog - Job search tips for a jobless recovery
With the economy headed toward what many believe will be a jobless recovery, the hunt is on for industries where pockets of job growth are a real possibility. Predictions say that when the recovery comes, early job growth will be in health care, education, government, and green business. Here's how to get ready today for the jobs of tomorrow.
Forget the advice you've been given so far, and cast a wide net. Many job seekers are advised, and wisely so, to narrow their job search whenever possible based on their preferences and career goals. But in a tight economy, it may help to broaden your scope. Consider a greater number of companies, industries, or geographic locations if your current list is not yet yielding opportunities.
Be prepared to move. When the recovery comes, it's likely to impact some places earlier than others. According to a report by MSNBC and Moody's Economy.com (MCO), job growth will return first to Colorado, Idaho, Oregon, Texas, and Washington State, starting in the fourth quarter, as pent-up demand for new technology spur the local economies. And in the second quarter of 2010 a second wave of job growth is expected in Alabama, Georgia, Nebraska, New Mexico, North Carolina, North Dakota, and South Dakota.

Chandler Hill Partners Blog - Scam--warning involving Twitter and job hunting
Through Tweets, e-mail and websites, job hunters are being told that they can make lots of money from the comfort of home using Twitter but the Better Business Bureau warns that the large print for such offers may promise big returns while the fine print can cost them every month.
Currently 14.7 million Americans are out of work and looking for a way to bring home a paycheck. Work-at-home schemes have often preyed on unsuspecting job hunters and now Twitter is being used as a way to convince cash-strapped individuals that they can make quick and easy money. Many of these schemes ask for money up front which is a big red flag. Some even link you to a bogus website that can install viruses or malware onto your computer.
Also be wary of sites with spelling and grammar errors. "Twitter is the newest bright shiny object online and a perfect hook for yet another work-at-home scheme," said Steve Cox, BBB spokesperson. "The pitch used to be about making money by sending e-mails or by placing ads on Google but now cash-strapped job hunters need to be wary of shelling out.

Chandler Hill Partners Blog - Keep it simple when interviewing
Use clear, strong, direct language to get your point across quickly and crisply. Keep sentences, paragraphs, and lists short. Curb any tendency to speak for more than 90-120 seconds without interacting with your interviewer. Time yourself, then listen. If you've been practicing a 3-minute introduction, you'll be surprised at how LONG that is when you're listening.
I think some of the over-communicating comes from fear that if you leave something out, you'll miss an important point that the reader or interviewer is looking for. Relax. Talk about what you've done and how it's been valuable (more profit, less cost, happier customers and employees, greater market share, and so forth) - and be specific! Don't spout generalities - tell stories!
Even better - listen, ask questions, and react to what you learn. Make it more about "them" and less about "you." You'll position yourself as a partner committed to solving problems - and isn't that what employers are looking for?

Chandler Hill Partners - Tips for working with headhunters and recruiters
Headhunters often have direct lines into desired positions, but also serve as gatekeepers who reject candidates that don't fit the bill. The key is finding out how to work with recruiters so you can be considered for the position you want. First, remember that a headhunter, or recruiter, works for the employer. That means you don't set the rules and must make yourself a desirable candidate.
Come across as arrogant, difficult or lacking skills, and the recruiter will move on to other candidates. However, if you are a professional, possessing valuable and up-to-date skills, the headhunter will keep you in mind for all sorts of job openings. Some tips for working with headhunters include:
You should be able to clearly and concisely explain to a recruiter why you would be a valuable employee. Don't lie. Headhunters are almost certain to check up on your background, and they'll catch you in untruths. Do your homework. It's fair to ask the headhunter about other clients and expertise. Do your research and Trust your gut. If you choose to work with multiple headhunters, let each of them know what you're doing. Otherwise, more than one might promote you to the same employer, and that can be a problem.

Chandler Hill Partners Blog - Capitalize on what you already know
Looking for a new job is tough enough without stressing out over it. Use the skills you've already acquired on the job to make it easier. Most people have felt the sting of losing a job and the anguish of trying to find a new position. The search for work can be frustrating and tiring. That's why it is important to properly plan the process and treat job hunting as a full-time job.
All the energy that a job seeker used to put into the daily eight-to-five grind now needs to be harnessed and focused on finding that next great career opportunity. Utilizing basic abilities like organization, planning, and interpersonal skills will come in handy and make the job of looking for a new position just that much easier.
Get organized and pull together all the resources available to you. This means it is time to make sure you have the most up-to-date resume and cover letter, your list of contacts for networking is current, and a list of internet job sites where you can look for openings is compiled. Remember looking for a new job can be tough business. So putting all those skills to good use is the smart thing to do and can help job seekers capitalize on what they already know.

Chandler Hill Partners - Now is the time to refocus job goals
At a time when it seems no one is safe from layoffs, can you find job security? Perhaps lifetime employment is nonexistent in some traditional fields, but job placement experts say other careers hold more promise. The key is to identify growing and emerging industries, such as healthcare, life sciences, technology, alternative energy, and higher education. Job seekers have to adapt their skills to fit the needs of those industries.
By not focusing on the job title, you open yourself up to new opportunities and may be able to transfer your skills to a completely different industry. As job seekers explore new industries, they also must adapt their search techniques, job placement specialists say. A few years ago skilled workers could post their resume on one job search website like Monster.com, get 10 calls from employers, and land a job in no time. But not anymore.
The times have changed. Now you need to post your resume on several job boards and career niche websites, as well as online networking sites like LinkedIn.com. In addition, job seekers need to turn the gloom and doom of a layoff into a positive outlook. Rather than panicking, try looking at unemployment as a time of possibility and growth.

Chandler Hill Partners - Interviewing tips for introverts and shy job seekers
Some common behaviors of shy and introverted job seekers include: Preferring to think first and talk later; Preferring writing over talking; Preferring meaty conversations over chit chat; Being calm and reserved. So, how do these traits translate to fast-paced networking events or job interviews? How does an introverted job candidate get a word in edgewise? Here are some tips:
Wait for the person to breathe. Wedge your way in with bridge comments like, "That's really interesting. I have faced a similar situation in my former company and gotten results." Try smiling at the start - it makes breaking in easier. Remember that most extroverts don't consider it rude to interrupt. It's part of their normal speech pattern.
How about that issue of preferring to reflect before responding to an out-of-the blue question? Buy a little time to think by rephrasing the question. For example, "That's a really good question. I'd like to take a few seconds to think about it if it's alright with you." Get over the self-defeating committee in your head. Remind yourself that you have value to offer. Finally, what if you had something significant to say, but the conversation has since moved on to other things? Not a problem. Extroverts are more accustomed to bouncing between thoughts, so you're safe here. Try a lead in like, "I just thought of something I'd like to add."

Who's still hiring in this tough economy?
Though it is no longer a job seeker's market, hiring has not come to a standstill. The choices of jobs may not be as numerous, but they are still out there - from smaller mom-and-pops to larger government organizations like the U.S. Census Bureau.
Private companies in health care, human resources, technology, time-shares, security, retail stores, restaurants, and supermarkets are still looking for people to hire, as others scale back and trim down their staff. The hospitality sector has been hardest hit, with retail not far behind, as national chains announce closures and cutbacks. Though some hotel workers have been able to keep their jobs, hours have been scaled back, or pay reduced.
For so long, unemployment was low, and employers would take anyone with a pulse. Job seekers got used to that. Now we're back to higher unemployment rates, and you've got to work harder to find a job. Job listings are not coming in as rapidly as they did during boom times but you can still find them out there if you look hard enough. You just have to use all the resources available to you from traditional classifieds to online job boards and continuing to build your network. - Abridged: Star Bulletin

Speeding up the job search process
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Job hunters who are only using traditional methods in their quest for a new job are often finding themselves frustrated due to the lack of positive response. Searching through traditional methods alone can take hundreds of hours and produce a small response. The biggest challenge with traditional job search methods is that only a fraction of the jobs available are advertised.
Almost every job hunter is chasing these limited number of advertised job openings at the same time as everyone else. All this becomes quite frustrating. The employer is overwhelmed with all of the responses and the job hunter is lost in the shuffle. People looking for jobs start to feel desperate, frustrated, and even hopeless. When job seekers reach this point, they are ready to simply give up while others will try anything that offers a glimmer of hope.
In hard times, finding a job can take months of time and effort. But you can speed up the process by using online search tools to save time and organize your efforts. It's recommended that you use multiple methods to find job opportunities that you are interested in. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics suggest that people who use many job search methods find jobs faster than people who use only one or two.

Building skills for the new economy
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- First, as skills become more integral to boosting productivity growth, many companies need workers with higher skills. Second, as the new labor market becomes less stable and more risky, workers need new tools with which to successfully navigate it. If the new economy is to restore to Americans some effective control over their economic lives, it must offer opportunities and resources for navigating this new labor market.
The new economy is more dynamic, faster, and entrepreneurial. With dynamism, however, comes risk. Up to a third of all jobs are in flux every year. As new companies spring up and established companies respond to change and competition, fewer workers can look forward to long careers with a single employer. This job "churning" means that, because companies can retain less of their investment in training, they invest less. This means that the old forms of security that workers enjoyed have dramatically declined.
Employees must now continually reinvent themselves throughout their working lives, even if they remain with the same employer. And the responsibility for getting the education and training an employee needs has shifted from the company to the individual. As a result, skills and adaptability have become the new job security.

Job market recovery's missing ingredient ...
WASHINGTON, D.C. -- Despite signs that the recession gripping the nation's economy may be easing, the unemployment rate is projected to continue rising before topping out. The likelihood of severe unemployment extending into the 2010 midterm elections and beyond poses a significant political hurdle to President Obama. "Our hope would be to actually create some jobs this year," Obama said recently. Obama has defended his economic approach -- which includes the $787 billion economic stimulus plan.
So far, the White House has counseled patience even as the political debate surrounding its economic policies grows more urgent. Officials point out that job growth will not come until robust economic expansion takes hold. Still, the flagging job market is likely to stir calls for further stimulus efforts as polls show voters growing increasingly wary of federal spending in the wake of a costly series of financial- and auto-industry bailouts and amid current efforts to expand health-care coverage to the uninsured, which is estimated to cost at least $1 trillion over the next decade.
Many economists agree that the job market would be in much worse shape had the stimulus package not been enacted. And some say more stimulus measures may be needed. Since the recession took hold, the U.S. economy has lost 5.7 million jobs. In recent months, the velocity of job losses has slowed substantially, which, combined with a rising stock market and increases in consumer spending, has offered hope that a recovery is beginning to take hold.
